In the latest "I want to punch myself in the face" moment, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. An excerpt from an article reads, "The appeals court agreed with a lower court judge who ruled in 2010 that the law is unconstitutional because it interferes with the right of a state to define marriage and denies married gay couples federal benefits given to heterosexual married couples, including the ability to file joint tax returns." Herein lies the problem- no state has the right or the power to redefine marriage. No state has the right or the power to redefine what constitutes life. We as humans can play games and pretend we have this power but we do not. Widespread acceptance of homosexual behavior or abortion doesn't make it right or inherently good. The American Humanist Association is giving a coveted (really?) humanist award to 16-year-old Jessica Ahlquist this year at the 71st Annual AMA Conference. Ahlquist is the young woman leading a charge to have a prayer mural removed in her high school as well as advocating the removal World War I and II memorial crosses. Wow....um, what an achievement. Not to be outdone though are other award recipients such as Gloria Steinem who will receive a "Humanist of the Year" award and another teenaged young man who will receive a "Freedom From Religion" award. Now, I could be wrong here, but it seems to me that the humanist movement wears a convenient cover of people being nice to other people without the "interference" of God. Miley Cyrus (most popularly known from her Disney sitcom, Hannah Montana) appeared on a talk show yesterday speaking about the importance of parents talking to their children about sex . "It’s ignorant not to talk to your kids about it or [not] make it seem as magical or cool as it actually is,” she said. Good point, Miley. Parents are the first and primary educators of their children and their lives stand as a powerful instrument of formation. Miss Cyrus then goes on to say, "The girls that really base how much they’re worth on the sexual favors they can do for somebody, that makes me really sad...your worth isn’t based on [sex]," she added. "Your worth is based on how you feel about yourself.” Okay, here is the issue. Several Catholic institutions filed lawsuits against the government today regarding the contraceptive mandate being forced upon the insurance plans of Catholic organizations. Please remember, the contraceptive mandate is not really about contraception. It's been cleverly buried in this controversial topic. When I saw the title of this article "World's Ugliest Woman", it made me cringe. I was thinking, "Who has given her this title and has she somehow agreed to it?" But as I read the article, it is clear that this woman, Lizzie Velasquez, isn't ugly at all. She is just as God has allowed her to be- in all her radiance. I heard this song a couple of times today and I like the lyrics. I think in a certain way (go with me on this one) that these words are along the lines of something Jesus speaks to our hearts. How often we have been disappointed in relationships and we think God will reject us like many other people have. But He isn't like that, He isn't like the rest, so to speak. He wants to give us a place to rest, to give our heart a break.
